University of Southampton Fitout

Fitout of Building 175

text

The design is a fit-out of the former Lloyds Register (Building175) on the Boldrewood Innovation Campus, which was masterplanned, designed and delivered in phases by Grimshaw architects 2009-2020. B175 was completed in 2014.

We were appointed at the start of 2022 to explore and implement a fit-out based on activity-based working principles for the university, with Lloyds moving out during 2023.

The project involved moving the University of Southampton Business School into the building and utilising existing facilities where possible, whilst reconfiguring to meet ‘activity based working’ principles and academic requirements.

Although there were budget and design constraints, working within an existing, large building and layout, we were able to achieve a sustainable fit-out – re-using furniture and carpets, as well as making a significant difference to the way the building can be used.

The building has been completely re-purposed to accommodate the requirements of an academic community and has resulted in a better utilisation of the space. This was achieved by undertaking an extensive end-user engagement, workshops, department sessions and case study visits.

A  Post Occupancy Evaluation is an important part of the project, this will include review and feedback on the use and occupation, with any planned action prioritised accordingly and then carried out.
